Determining the correct size replacement screw is a frustrating, time consuming task. It’s the “Goldilocks” dilemma. The first screw you try is too large, the next is too small. The Goldilocks Screw Gauge™ is a precision milled steel probe graduated in six “steps” of increasing diameter. Insert the gauge through the barrel’s bottom threaded leaf until it feels snug. Note which “step” is in the barrel. Compare that “step” to the sizing chart provided to determine the proper replacement screw diameter. The colors on the chart correspond with most major screw suppliers’ color code on the cap of the screw vial. If your color coding is different, there is a chart on the reverse that you can customize with your own color code. US Patent #960004S1.

For years, Western has been asked to carry a line of screws. I have been very hesitant to get involved in offering a product that does not have a competitive advantage. In response to these requests, we researched what innovation would be needed in the world of eyeglass screws.

 What we found is that the industry does not need another line of screws, but it does need a time saving way of determining the proper screw size.

The old-fashioned screw gauge measures the size of the barrel hole but does not consider the added dimension of the screw threads. A 1.2mm hole does not use a 1.2mm replacement screw. Therefore, it gives only a rough starting point.

Western Optical Supply went to work designing an accurate and easy to use probe that correlates to the correct screw diameter. However, to manufacture the Goldilocks Screw Gauge required advanced technology. To mill stainless steel on this micro scale with precision tolerances within 0.005” down to the tip of an ever thinning spindle is a technical feat. The resulting gauge will make the task of replacing screws much less of a chore.

Helpful usage tip: Plug The Hot Box into a wall timer and set it to come on an hour before you plan on seeing patients. This will give the unit enough time to get up to temperature. On first set up turn the On/Off switch to the midway point and control the temperature for each frame by raising (cooler) or lowering (hotter) the glass beads. Adjust the On/Off switch until you find the heat level you are comfortable with. The temperature adjustment is not like a quickly responding toaster as the heat is very gradual.

CAUTION: The temperature knob will be HOT to the touch. Do not use it to raise and lower the temperature of the medium bath on a per job basis.

Looking For Stress?

There are many reasons to check for stress in mounted lenses. Too much stress on a lens may not manifest itself until the day your patient exits a warm office building into sub-freezing temperatures and the lens implodes. Diamonds Are A Hole’s Best Friend?

You drill a hole for a rimless mounting through a lens. Looks good and clean. You mount the lenses and down the road jobs are coming back because there is cracking around the holes. Big problem. Easy solution. Use this tool to chamfer the hole to eliminate a pressure point from developing. Diamond tipped conical point mounted in a carbon steel nickel plated handle.

Removing demo lenses from frames can be annoying and sometimes painful.

This plier isn’t subtle. Place the pointed jaw in the middle of the lens and squeeze. The lens will break and fall out of the eyewire. Great for removing display lenses from rimlon frames in a snap!

"This plier grows out of numerous requests to be able to remove demo lenses without hurting your fingers or the frame. Originally demo lenses just popped out, sometimes when you didn’t want them to. Now, with more accurate production those suckers are in there. Here’s a tool to match the energy needed to dislodge the lens. I found the most expeditious method to be splitting the lens. Shield your eyes and hold the plier and eyewear away from yourself and others."

Has deep jaws for use on lenses up to 86mm in diameter and 15mm thick. Scale is in 10th millimeter increments. Soft spring and Delrin plastic tipped jaws protect the lens.

The Manual Pupilometer is the quick way to take accurate measurements of a patient's monocular and binocular interpupillary distance (PD). The higher the prescribed lens power, the greater the need for precise PD measuring. Reduces costly do-overs due to inaccurate measuring. You have replaced the plastic tubing in a compression rimless. Excess tubing is extending beyond the lens surface. Cutting the bushing down close to the lens will produce a tighter and stronger compression fit. Using a razor poses a danger to both fingers and lenses. Instead, reach for this plier to safely trim tubing. Rounded jaws prevent scratching the lens. 5mm wide head. Use only on plastic compression rimless tubing.
